Pros

Environment encourages creative freedom. More responsibility for those who show a willingness to learn. Cross-training opportunities that offer many valuable skills that translate well into other jobs. Highly attentive management staff.

Cons

Don't earn enough money to be self sufficient. Hierarchy system requires frequent tests that give the illusion that you're moving up the totem pole when you're really not. Expected to tailor lifestyle activities outside of work to always be promoting positive company image. Gift shop workers expected to "live sample" items in the gift shop by loading on tons of cumbersome merchandise such as hats, necklaces, scarves, beaded bracelets, etc. and you get reprimanded if you don't wear enough things. Company takes no loss prevention measures (cameras, security tags on merchandise, etc) but blames the one employee on a packed floor if items are stolen. Meals are 50% off when they should be free.

Pros

There are lots of cool products to sell, and the store is small, so it is easy to navigate.

Cons

However, you get hours based on how much you sell. The amount of transactions that are because of your influence will help you get more hours. If you are shy, like I am, you will not get very many hours. They emphasize selling and require you to ask the guest if they want candy, to try to make another sale, and it annoys the guest. Oftentimes, you will get complained to or yelled at by guests because if they had wanted to buy candy, they would have.

Pros

Compensation and benefits are very good. The brand is very well-regarded by its consumers, and that halo attaches to the employees. Good flexibility for employees. The business is run very seriously and in a no-nonsense manner for the purpose of maximizing return to shareholders.

Cons

The flip side of the company's business performance excellence is that the people who run it are now valued strictly as component parts in the corporate machine. This is a corporation first, everything else second, including the warm and fuzzy "soul" of the brand. Those who aspire to work here need to understand and accept this, or they'll be disillusioned or disappointed.
