A company with a different strategy

Pros

I've worked at Dire Wolf Digital for over three years. There are two major reasons that I love my job. 1) I find it fulfilling to work at a company that focuses on the kinds of games I find interesting to make and enjoy playing. Being able to work on something you are passionate about is an incredible opportunity. 2) The amazing coworkers. They are highly talented and highly passionate about making great games. They are also an interesting and supportive crew who get together for after-hours boardgames, health initiatives, food parties, etc.

Cons

The atmosphere can be demanding and stressful. In 2010 and 2011, there were times of crunch as the company had to endure through challenging times and multiple projects with a smaller staff. Fortunately, crunch-time is largely a thing of the past. The office space is also a con; currently the company is split into two separate floors of an office building, sometimes generating some friction with communication.

Pros

- Excellent co-workers. Employees are intelligent and love both their work and breaking from work to have fun. - There are no barriers to a good idea presented well. Employees readily work with others outside their discipline to understand and address emergent needs. - Management and production make constant efforts to reach out to employees and improve process. (Recent development.) - As a result of above comments, the culture is one of great personal growth. You will (and must) quickly learn how to perform and communicate at a high level. - A+ projects. Great opportunities to be positioned as a meaningful player in the industry. - Company activities provide much-needed breaks in the work schedule.

Cons

- Directional decisions are often made out of the view of rank-and-file employees (by management, partners, or product owners who are so overscheduled that they can barely be found). - Moderate delays in distributing information once decisions are made. - Required work hours can balloon depending on department and project - A few employees stretch the limits of a comfortable workplace - Very tight ship - somewhat below-average compensation (apparently) and informality of perks lead employees to self-select out if they don't value the culture

Rocket Ship

Pros

Dire Wolf is a rocket ship. We work on exciting games and the folks here are smart and dedicated. There is limitless opportunity to take on additional responsibility if you are up for it, and most people are their own harshest critic. The culture is very collaborative and new ideas (if you can defend them against scrutiny) are highly valued. The company is made up of folks who have shipped dozens of games combined, but people are generally open to new solutions. \It's a gaming culture and people often want to stay late to play the game(s) they work on just for fun. I think this is a great indicator for the future success of the company. The studio is located in Denver. Although I didn't grow up here, I've come to love this city. it has all the activities of a big city while remaining walkable with easy access to all the outdoor activities of Colorado. The studio goes on semi-frequent outings together, and you can certainly find someone at the studio who is willing to join you for almost anything.

Cons

As with most of the industry, we crunch. The high expectations mentioned above are a double-edged sword and have historically blurred the line between work and home life. Both of these issues are getting better. As problems have been identified and then solved or had their effects mitigated, our circumstances have dramatically improved. The other problem Dire Wolf has faced is morale. As the company has scaled up and experienced growing pains, some people became frustrated (e.g. some of the other posts here). We have grown considerably since then and worked through many of the resulting issues. By bringing in new talent to fill holes that were causing some of these headaches, people feel more empowered to focus on the work they feel is important. Management has instituted processes to improve self-reflection and improved feedback channels.
