A very tough place to work

Pros

There are some genuinely great people at Expel, and the office is a very fun place to be. Being able to work remotely is excellent and there are good benefits.

Cons

The true competitive, finger-pointing, under-bus-throwing culture at Expel is hidden underneath an outward facade of inclusivity, teamwork, and “we’re all about our people”. Because there’s a lack of clear strategy and direction for the company, combined with upper leadership’s knowledge gaps about how certain departments work, strong personalities and loud voices are able to use office politics to curry favor and the experts in their areas are repeatedly knocked down. If you’re not one of the show-runners, you will be trampled and getting impactful work done will be impossible. You will be blamed for things you have no control over and made to feel lesser than, while the loud voices are able to repeatedly make mistakes they will then blame you for. And leadership will let them and double down on you. Quick wins take precedence over doing things correctly, and there is not much time given to work kinks out before layoffs loom. Longer tenured folks would talk about a really lovely company culture that has since become obsolete in recent years and I saw only faint traces of.

Circling the bowl… and not in a good way

Pros

The company used to be so much different :( not anymore

Cons

- diversity has become a running joke , strikes me as posturing at this point vs anything tangible - success here doesn’t seem to be a function of performance but alignment with power centers - mgmt is losing their way, where did the compassion go

Pros

Strong company culture (at least historically) and a genuinely impressive product. The founders are approachable, down-to-earth, and clearly care. Most people here are kind, collaborative, and great to work with.

Cons

There's been so much leadership turnover that the culture is starting to erode. Many recent C-level hires feel misaligned with the values that made this place special. There’s a lack of steady leadership and long-term vision, which leads to reactive decision-making, siloed work, and general confusion. There have been glimmers of hope, moments where it felt like things were improving, but those changes never seem to stick.
