Pros

Good as a basic , starting position in finance . Plenty of opportunity for personal growth and development , from the client interactions , more than anything . Their classes and training to prepare seasonal tax preparers are great as far as content and almost free for employees . The business is steady compared to an individual tax preparer's office . Just the name on my resume opened doors for me later . The option to work full time or part time is great as also the fact that this can be a great second job for someone trying to rack up experience . Each employee has the flexibility to excel and learn their own way .

Cons

No benefits . Commission based job . After working really hard , starting as a newbie and becoming one of top 2 or 3 producers in one of the busiest offices , the 20% of money collected from clients that I was supposed to recieve became 18.8 the 2nd year and 16.8% the third year and so on . The company's business model is being threatened by tax software and cheaper competition , so company management comes up with newer and better ways to screw employees each year to pay them less for the work they do . The commission situation also makes competition between employees sometimes unpleasant . Tax preparer cannot really be a bread-and-butter job

Pros

Communication seems to be the highlight of this experience. Management at all levels seems afraid to commit to new ideas at any level due to cost and personnel cutting. Everyone seems to be just hanging on as long as they can.

Cons

Career opportunities are limited as this company has downsized over 20% in past year. Everyone seems to feel that they are on thin ice and afraid to make decisions. Many of the top people have no field experience with the company and it shows. Many have come from the outside.

Pros

H&R Block is the #1 company in tax preparation. If you want to demonstrate your tax knowledge and expertise, this is the place to be. There is a sense of family in most retail offices and you can't beat the tax training you'll receive.

Cons

H&R Block, after 50+ years in the business has a difficult time figuring out how to communicate information to employees and compensate employees fairly. It's a race to accomplish everything that needs to be done to be ready for business before doors are flung open on January 2nd each year. Organization is horrible. Benefits are almost non-existent (although better than before) for seasonal employees.
