Pros

I have been at my salon for several years. I work with a great group of stylists and have wonderful clients.

Cons

The salon is old, old, old! The clients are always getting coupons. That means we still have to give 100% for less money. In addition to our services, we also have to walk away from clients to answer phones, greet clients and clean up in between. We should get 50% commission without having to sell a ridiculous amount of home hair care. The products are to expensive for this level of salon.

Congrats on being with us for 8 years and working with a great group of stylists and wonderful clients... I'm not sure what salon you are in but we are taking steps to refresh older salons - I am sure that if yours is as old as you mention that it is on the list to be refreshed! I am glad to see that despite the use of coupons that you are giving 100% service - it is the service that is going to keep guests coming back even when they do not have a coupon! We are exploring ways to offer a better check-in/reception experience for both guests and salon professionals...stay tuned!

Pros

Good first stylist job to learn behind the chair. Comp plans seem to be improving. The learning on demand is a fantastic idea!

Cons

No support for stylists discriminated by customers. Ive been called derogatory names by guests that management has ignored and had the guests serviced. Open on Holidays for the convenience of guests. Some salons in desperate need of remodel. Unclear as to what's a "redo" situation or what's a "smile back" situation, usually decided on a personal basis. Each salon makes their own rules. Schedule changes at the 11th hour with no word from management. No guarantee of lunch breaks. Passive-agressive techniques from store management to keep us from contacting upper-management. Management feeding into gossip and creating a seriously unprofessional environment. As with many salon environments SL has their group of favorites and everybody else is left out to dry. Skipped over for management consideration despite years of upper-managerial experience for SL's work-buddies. Despite my grievances I believe this company has the right outlook, but needs work on the follow-through. Keep in mind, us stylists are the most important part of the salon, and there is a lot of competition to choose from.

It breaks my heart to hear that you were called derogatory names by guest and that you feel that it was not addressed...while we respect that everyone is not going to hold the same world views, we do not support discrimination in any form or fashion. I totally get that working oh holidays is not at the top of everyone's wish list but when one works in a retail environment it is a given that operating hours are going to be driven by the convenience of guests :-) Yes, redo and smile backs are decided on an individual basis because each situation is different and there are a number of factors that must be taken into consideration - at the end of the day we want to ensure that every guest has a wonderful experience and leaves feeling and looking great - sometimes we knock it out of the park the first time around but on rare occasions we have to give it a second try - that is when a redo or smile-back situation comes into play. I love your advice to management and agree on "let's grow our leaders and set a precedent for our people" we are striving to do this each and everyday! There are a number of leadership and non-leadership trainings that are being developed and rolled out. I hope that you stay with us and be a part of the journey!

Pros

It’s a great type of salon to start a career. You will learn the basics after the beauty school basics. Men’s cuts, women’s cuts/ color etc. “ Sometimes” you may work alongside a positive mentor type of stylist. This can be beneficial when starting out.

Cons

I have recently learned about the “disposal” program this company operates on. The “get them to quit” instead of having to fire them program. The force them to transfer to a worse location so they quit program. I have witnessed this happen to stylists and management in different locations about 10 times or more durning my time with this company. When a call to HR was attempted, I was told by help desk that I had to submit a ticket on the matter and they WOULD NOT give me direct contact info. Submitting a ticket doesn’t mean my concerns would be anonymous and that was my level of comfort. I don’t understand how an awesome team mate or leader is great one day and poof! You come in the next day and they are gone for all these issues you had no idea existed. Or are the facts more accurately that 1 disgruntled employee was able to form a manipulation situation and get teammates on board to throw around accusations leading to a termination, transfer etc? I saw this so many times and it was shocking and terrifying. The district manager did little to no investigation before going with majority rules. I guess this is how a company has to operate when they have thousands of employees. Cycle through the numbers, more will come. Benefits have almost completely disappeared. Discount plan health insurance that will leave you in debt and no 401k match anymore? What’s the appeal here?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I am sorry to hear about your attempt to contact HR. HR is always available and it is not necessary to make contact via the help desk - we will address this concern to make sure that everyone is aware of how to properly reach the HR department. As with any situation there are multiple levels and everything is not always transparent to everyone involved - matters such as the one that you described are often too deep and complex to be discussed via a response to a review but please know that more times than not when there is a transfer made it is done to give the professional the greatest opportunity to succeed - sometimes all works out and sometimes it does not...but it would be unfair for either side to try to respectfully speak to this without knowing all of the facts. Although you are no longer with the company I welcome the opportunity to chat with you about your concerns - feel free to reach out to the home office.
