Pros

U really gotta try to get fired. And I mean TRY. Keep trying. The bus pass discount is fine.

Cons

You really gotta try to get fired. And I mean TRY. You can tread water for years, fall behind, become terrible at your job, call out sick once a week (or more), not work, leave shift whenever the mood strikes, misbehave and generally be a wart on the back of coworkers and the company and they'd rather keep you in staff than go to the trouble of firing you (and risk paperwork or a lawsuit or complaint about missed breaks/ lunches which are a regular occurrence. Yes, AFTER the $3M fine for missed breaks/lunches.) But if you try and I mean TRY to better yourself by doing a great, life-sucking 110% job, putting in effort, learning new skills, you can do absolutely jack. Nill. Unless you're friends with the right person. It's friends hiring friends, friends looking the other way for friends, and friends helping friends generally abuse the work and effort made by people not in the "friends with manager" circle. It's exhausting and degrading. There are no performance incentives. And yet there are also seemingly zero consequences for non-performance (though there are even fewer for those in the right circles). Raises are neglible, out of employee hands, and benefits (tuition assistance, insurance, pension) are being knocked down at every turn. Except for employees who stick around for 30 years (easier when you've got the right friends, you can stick around and climb that friend ladder), pay and benefits are non competitive. Prospective employee, just go somewhere else. I promise you, your career deserves better.

Pros

Level 1 trauma hospital at Emanuel. Interesting patient population to work with. Pay and benefits competitive. Great front-line nurses and doctors.

Cons

Middle management globally incompetent and unsupportive to those below them. Large impersonal system with no loyalty to long-time employees.

Pros

Stable work environment and flexible schedule. 401k match.

Cons

Be sure to negotiate your salary up front or you will get stuck creeping along at a dismal 3% for the rest of your time in the job classification. Compensation is not merit based, so you have to be self-motivated.Due to budget cuts a few years back, they expect a lot out of each employee- so be ready to bring your A game all day every day. Tried to get re-classed as my workload and responsibilities changed significantly and does not reflect the job title, but was told no.
