Okay Experience, Little Direction,

Pros

It gave me solid experience for a first job out of college. Everyone on the team is really friendly and open to questions. Many of them had done Americorps themselves or something similar and could identify with the experience and give solid advice. Their program is also fantastic and does have incredible results. It definitely helps to know that you're working for a nonprofit that actually works.

Cons

There were way too many times where I felt like I had nothing to do. My managers gave little direction in terms of our actual responsibility and had very low expectations of us. It was honestly really boring most of the time. I felt like since we were technically free labor, they didn't really care about making sure we were actually adding to the team. Plus, when we did have something to do, it was mostly busy work, or sending scheduling emails. The job posting made it seem like we'd have way more interaction with people when in fact we just spent the day staring at a computer screen and waiting for emails to respond to.

Great Nonprofit; Growing Pains

Pros

Everyone is dedicated to the mission of helping kids gain confidence and literacy skills. Great for recent graduates who are looking to grow their professional knowledge.

Cons

AmeriCorps pay is the barest minimum; keep that in mind. Communication between full-time staff and AmeriCorps team could be better. Nothing at all to do for the last month of service; you have to find outside volunteer opportunities to satisfy the 1700-hour requirement.

Pros

Reading Partners is a really challenging but supportive environment in which to do a year of service. I love having a lot of responsibility as an AmeriCorps member. I got to meet a ton of inspiring volunteer tutors, and learned best practices for teaching literacy skills. Obviously the best part is working with students and getting to see them grow in their abilities.

Cons

The main con to the AmeriCorps positions is that there is a large gap between Americorps members and full-time employees. Of course, as for any AmeriCorps position, they stipend is not great, but Reading Partners pays more than most AmeriCorps. Additionally, if you don't want to work very hard, look elsewhere.
