CMST

Pros

Decent benefits. The idea of the CMST program is great but execution is quite poor. Vacation policy is decent. There is room for growth if you're in with the right channels. Work life balance is all right if executives staff projects properly.

Cons

Higher level management takes advantage of employees with less experience. Favoritism is clearly shown amongst executives/directors. This leads to losing good talent and keeping underqualified employees. Compensation is low. "Flex" program does not actually work - people accept an offer from Shawmut under this condition and end up being required to stick to stringent office hours & location. Staffing on the project management side is disorganized - this ends up with some employees being overworked & underpaid, and some having excess downtime (which prevents learning and growing). High turnover - leads to unhappy clients who need to deal with staff being constantly replaced with no advance notice.

Pros

Great benefits, unique and fascinating projects, abundance of resources and help available , ability to travel, well qualified and competent peers

Cons

Too many Project Executives with absolutely no construction industry experience outside of the company, lacking the sense of how things are really done in the industry. Company has way too many tiers of management. Promote many unfit and undeserving people to positions where they abuse their power.

Challenging but Rewarding Company

Pros

Shawmut is clearly on the upward climb towards positioning itself as a leading place to work. We have opened multiple offices across the company in the past few years, and look to open more as the industry allows. They have made clear strides in the past few years to greatly improve their work-life balance for employees, and, from my perspective, are the most transparent employer I have ever had in terms of sharing what they have on the horizon to continue improving. They recently instituted paid family leave (one month) for new parents or those who have an immediate family member (kids, parents or spouse) who need to be cared for. This is not common in the construction industry. They have successfully rolled out flex-time work, which from as far as I can tell, has been extremely well received and utilized throughout the company. Working from home, compressing your work week, and other such options make them a really formidable employer to the younger crowd; not to mention the great culture of company outings, and general comraderie which is not easy to recreate (one of Shawmut's biggest strengths.)

Cons

With all they are doing to improve, their IT push hasn't really kept up with the other things they have really made marked changes in. They have some great IT staff now, with a new CIO that seems to have some great momentum; but the struggle in the past few years (and is still going on, unfortunately) is that the IT dept seemed to be fighting an uphill battle against budget constraints and outdated technology. It seems that is being addressed now, but the issues definitely create some serious issues for productivity on the administrative side which can be frustrating in such a fast paced environment. Shawmut as a whole puts a huge emphasis on creating a well respected, highly productive model for our client, so when you feel like you are working against simple tech issues, it can be stressful to feel like you're somehow going to not meet the expectations set by not only Shawmut but the client for deadlines.

Shawmut Design and Construction Response

Thanks as always for the feedback. IT, like other departments, has finite resources, but our priorities are clear. We’re reducing reliance on ERP, adding modern applications to support critical operations, integrating applications, and upgrading our infrastructure and services. There’s a lot of work to do and it will take some time, but we’re completely focused on these priorities.
