Pros

Great people Good work-life balance Great product, good company mission

Cons

PE is turning this place from a cool tech startup into a half-baked tech company run by MBA finance people. Was getting very top-heavy managers/directors and not enough analysts. Analysts spend too much time making pretty slide decks to support high-ups' decisions with little ownership. They are way out of touch with market salaries for analytics people. Folks were getting poached by FAANG and Bay Area startups for 2x the comp. They do not appreciate the talented startup employees that built this company and the culture. Most of these people have already left, got let go, or got sidelined. Promotions are based on "whether you have big company experience" and politics rather than what you do here. Constant changes in leadership. Not much innovation since 2019. Most of what they've been doing was short-term growth tactics, plus under paying/penny pinching employees to squeeze out profits. I left because I was offered a more senior role for much higher comp and more ownership, after being denied promotions repeatedly as a startup employee, despite being key to the company's growth and getting a lot of traction from Big Tech.

Pros

Good support from fellow engineers.

Cons

Management doesn't have a vision of how to grow and aren't willing to listen to those that present solutions they don't understand. Communication from management was lacking. Company overly aggressive about COVID vaccinations, blindly following CDC initially because it appeared vaccinations were going to be federally required. Once the OSHA rules were deemed inappropriate they didn't care and continued with the requirements even for remote employees (though allowing exceptions). They also segregated those that were not vaccinated by forcing only them to wear masks in the office, even though the decision to not be vaccinated (with approved exception) was supposed to be private.

Good, not great

Pros

Many of the 'cooler' problems the firm has get resources absolutely thrown at them - shockingly high rate of senior-middle-management poaches from large well regarded firms who brought meaningful expertise to the issue. Folks are generally kind, competent, and well-meaning.

Cons

'Old guard' from startup days bled out at such an alarming rate that a lot of key institutional knowledge was lost. Too much emphasis on putting the right stuff into slide decks and not enough emphasis on actual, measurable results - many external hires ought to have been internal promotions which exacerbated the above issue with institutional knowledge. I'd imagine this will change over time as the firm gets closer to whatever it is H&F is shooting for, but I left because it felt like there were hugely misaligned incentives for IC's.
