Pros

- SEO team had great culture, very collaborative environment and teammates were always willing to take the time to help out - More often than not, promotions happen from within so there is opportunity to move up - Option to work from home/remotely - Flex scheduling, as long as you start by 8am - Work is pretty simple and does not require a ton of prior knowledge, so it's a good starting point for someone who wants to explore a career in digital marketing

Cons

- Overall company culture was not the best -- I understand COVID made this more difficult, but as an employee it came off more so as they stopped caring, as there were some efforts made at the beginning of the pandemic with Zoom happy hours etc. that stopped being planned - Very heavy workload, which led to a lot of stress and at times felt like it impacted the quality of work that was being delivered - Low pay and lack of appreciation by management/execs, which leads to a lack of employee retention and high turnover rate - Not a ton of opportunity or time for professional development -- new skills are taught when necessary, but priority was never placed on getting employees trained in essential SEO tools like Google Analytics

Thank you for taking time to leave your review! During your time at Straight North, we are happy to hear that the SEO team had a great culture, the environment was collaborative and that teammates were always willing to take the time to help out. It sounds like you also enjoyed the flexibility of work hours along with being able to work remote or from the office. We take great pride in hiring experts with 5-10+ years of experience along with creating opportunities for entry-level hires to start their career. As you started your career with us over the last 2 years, it sounds like you appreciated the ability to move up within the company, grow your skillset and increase your compensation. We train our SEO staff on a variety of tools including Google Keyword Planner, Google Analytics, Google Search Console, SEMrush, Ahrefs and Screaming Frog along with methodologies associated with keyword strategy, content optimization and technical SEO. We pay competitive salaries based on years of experience combined with skill level and have an annual performance/compensation review cycle. We promote staff throughout the year as advancement opportunities present themselves. While it is our goal to retain as many employees for as long as possible, we understand that staff at the beginning of their career may look for advancement opportunities outside of our company. We wish them the best of luck in their future career path. We agree that COVID has created a less than ideal culture for many businesses. While many staff members overwhelmingly enjoy working remotely, we know 100% remote work has its drawbacks. As COVID concerns continue to dissipate, we will continue to provide a flexible remote/office work policy and work to improve our culture. Thanks again for your feedback. It helps us work to continually improve our business.

Marketing Analyst and Specialist Positions

Pros

Growing company that presents a lot of opportunities for career growth. You will learn a lot of skills at this company and the company promotes from within most of the time. Promotions happen regularly in many areas of the company and If you start off as an Internet Marketing Analyst, you will most likely be promoted to a Specialist position within a few months. The management team and staff are very knowledgeable. Management is very open to new ideas and will regularly try new ways to do things. Work/life balance is also excellent and they are pretty flexible with scheduling.

Cons

Pay is very low, even for recent college grads that are looking to gain experience in a entry-level position. To be fair, they are up-front about salary and compensation during the interview process. They are a growing company in a competitive field that is looking to control costs, but salary is still well below average. If you meet or exceed expectations, you will receive a raise after the 6-month mark and the 1 year mark. Even after this, your pay will still be low and is what you probably should have started off at in the first place, especially if you are promoted to a specialist position. As an Analyst, if you receive a promotion to a specialist position, you will not receive a raise until your 6-month work anniversary, even if you are promoted to a specialist position rather quickly. Employee turn-over has also been high.
