Pros

Very comprehensive introduction to the expectations on you as a tutor, as well as a review and background of much of the material you will be expected to tutor. They make a better effort than other tutoring companies I've worked for to make sure you are "vetted".

Cons

It's really absurd that in such a high-priced marketplace (such as tutoring in the tri-state area) they feel it is reasonable to pay tutors at a rate that is roughly 25% to 15% of what they are charging the parents of the students being tutored.

Pros

They have an ok tutoring system in place.

Cons

The starting wage of $20 per hour is incredibly misleading. You are expected to pay for your own gas and travel expenses. You are also expected to spend a lot of time preparing for each lesson, (1-2 hours when you are first starting out, less once you get the hang of it). You will also spend a lot of time talking to the manager on the phone and by email and talking to parent's on the phone and by email. None of the extra work that you must do is paid. So, yes, you will make $40 for a 2 hour SAT or ACT lesson, however, you will spend about $5-$10 on gas and wear and tear on your car depending on how far you have to travel to your lesson. Additionally, you will spend approximately 1-3 hours of unpaid time preparing for your lesson, traveling, and corresponding with your manager and your student. The end result will equal about $10.00- $5.00 per hour when all is said and done. StudyPoint charges their clients exorbitant prices and only pays their tutors pennies on the dollar. I was shocked when I found out how much StudyPoint was raking in for my tutoring service. Approximately $150 per hour! Furthermore, StudyPoint changed their raise policy 2 times while I was working for them which resulted in me not receiving 2 of the raises that should have earned. When I got my first raise, I thought "wow this is great! a 50 cent raise after working 50 hours." The other 2 never came and I realized that I was being severely taken advantage of. For anyone looking for a part-time job, economically, you would be much better off taking a minimum wage job in fast food. However, if you are just doing it for fun and if you don't care about making any money, StudyPoint is an ok company to work for.

Good company to tutor for

Pros

--make you own schedule --work from home --expectations communicated clearly by management --more than adequate training, including regular additional workshops --regular and fair raise schedule (start at $15/hr, but can easily be into the $20's within a few months with good performance) --company likes to hire for senior positions from tutor pool, so there is opportunity to move up in the long term --recruitment bonuses if you help the company find other new hires

Cons

--you'll make less than you would tutoring in person --it is not always in the company's interest to tell parents the truth very bluntly (eg: your kid should not be studying for the SAT/ACT, as they are too far below college level to expect to perform well in college). To be fair to the company, they do try to communicate such things in gentler terms, but at the end of the day you have to be able to stomach the realities of test-prep tutoring: often the kid's time would be better spent in remedial classes, with a subject area tutor, in extracurricular activities, or [on rare occasions] even with a therapist, but even when you recognize that fact, you have no power to do anything about it.
