A thoroughly mixed bag.

Pros

Flexible hours. Good opportunity to work with students from a variety of backgrounds. Administrative staff that is generally responsive and thoughtful. Preparatory/training materials are sufficient to get you on your feet running.

Cons

Pay raise schedules keep changing. In the year that I've been working for StudyPoint, the system has changed at least twice. The effect of this is that I have not received several raises that I was promised at time of hire. This type of behavior is, frankly, infuriating. Considering prep time, travel time, uncompensated communications with parents and admins, tutors really are wildly undercompensated. Admins have a high rate of turn-around. As a result, building a positive relationship with your program manager is folly.

Tutor extortion

Pros

Always had students and plenty of hours

Cons

Paying tutors 20% of what the company charges is absurd and should be illegal. The average price per hour is 110$ and starting salary is 20$/hr for a tutor

Pros

You can turn your teaching role into a full time job if you want to (and have the drive/passion for it) - program managers are great about giving you as many student/programs (read: hours of work) as you'd like to take on. Curriculum is good, support from managers and directors is good. Online resources for students and instructors are easy to navigate. Any required training is paid. A lot of opportunities for growth - management encourages instructors to internally apply for full time management roles, experienced instructors regularly tapped to assist with creating training materials, training new instructors, updating curriculum materials, etc.

Cons

More transparency/clarity is necessary with the recent changes to the employee assessments (which impact your raises).
