Legit Side Gig

Pros

Great pay for part-time work, make your own schedule, no one is breathing down your throat and micromanaging you, relatively easy work

Cons

The only downside I really see is not being compensated for any work that is done outside of a tutoring session. Its not a TON of extra work, but significant enough that it is a bit bothersome to not get paid for. I get it, with sessions you can verify the work has been done but with the prep work it isn't as easy to make sure people aren't taking advantage. However, between emails and calls to parents and session prep it does add up.

Pros

I have been working with StudyPoint since 2006. Having started, grown, and sold 4 of my own Health Services Companies, I know what a well-run company looks like, and I am very selective who I work for. StudyPoint is an exceptionally well-run company with outstanding people at all levels of the organization. I have had the pleasure of working with and interacting with all levels of the organization and the people are friendly, responsive, personable, respectful, and reasonable. The families that we work with are very successful and high achievers, and they want their children to be the same. The pay is very good with periodic increases, the hours are flexible, the training is exceptional and the proprietary material is outstanding. If this wasn't a great company, I would never have stayed as long as I have.

Cons

Things slow down a little over the summer, but there are fewer tutors because of vacations.

More Students, Increase Pay

Pros

Studypoint does a lot of things very well. They have designed programs for test prep that include both homework sets and practice tests. The website they have designed for their students and tutors is wonderful. My program manager is understanding and easy to work for. It is a very rewarding and enjoyable job. They remove the aggravation of advertising yourself by finding you students.

Cons

Pay is relatively low once you factor in prep time, travel, parent consults, administrative work, etc. Starting pay is at $20 per hour; however after factoring in all of the above it decreases to around $12 per hour. ( The competition pays more!) Second issue is a lack of students. Currently I meet with two students for a total of 4 hrs per week. I'm sure I could get more students by expanding my service area; however the pay is much too low to be traveling more than 30 minutes one way to increase my workload.

Not enough pay for tutoring

Pros

Decent training material for ACT prep. I appreciated that students were found for me. Program manager was friendly and responsive.

Cons

No pay for session preparation, driving time, or gas. My hourly rate was effectively halved when these were accounted for.

Pros

Good training, online, with helpful materials from the company and beyond. Very helpful program managers with positive, friendly attitudes. Never afraid to ask questions or voice concerns. Great job for someone with a college degree who needs to make a little extra money and needs a flexible schedule! Great hourly pay and good students/families. So much flexibility!

Cons

I would have liked to be assigned more students, but unfortunately I never was able to tutor more than 6-8 hours a week. Not a lot of room to grow within the company.

We appreciate the feedback! There are a number of factors that impact how many assignments and hours a tutor receives (subject, location, schedule, student's needs, etc.). I will share this feedback with our recruiting team so we can set appropriate expectations with tutors. Thanks! Best, Greg President & Co-Founder

Pros

Super flexible hours, good management, lots of communication, strong starting pay.

Cons

The only opportunity for advancement in pay is based on the hours you get (which are largely random and seasonal, but that is expected). The training is a bit dated too, but there is talk of it being refurbished!

Pros

Studypoint is a wonderful organization with excellent support for tutors and families. We get to provide individualized one-to-one tutoring for awesome kids and develop really meaningful relationships with families. The pay is great and scheduling is extremely flexible. Raises are merit-based and frequent. I decide how many students I want and I work directly with students and their families to schedule our lessons. Managers are supportive and feedback is always honest and constructive. One of the best jobs I've ever had.

Cons

None. It really is an awesome job.

Low pay, no clients.

Pros

Supervisors, everyone you work with is nice, students/parents were great. Don't require a lot of proof to prove you can do the job, but you had better be able to do it.

Cons

The hourly wage is worth nothing, because unless your schedule is totally clear and open, you'll have less than 3 students. I tutor quite literally every subject at every level plus two foreign languages. They will e-mail and ask if I will tutor students 45+ minutes away because I am the only one who can do that subject. Hell no. They don't compensate for drive time, and at 25 an hour, I'm making basically minimum wage for skills that are obviously desirable. It's not worth it if you're looking for a decent amount of extra money on the side because they obviously struggle to get clients.

Thank you for taking the time to share this feedback. I am sorry to hear that your experience wasn't better. There are a number of factors that impact the number of students a tutor will be assigned, including location, schedule/availability, experience, fit with potential students, etc. Given those factors, though we ask that our tutors have the availability to work with a minimum of 3 students, we can't guarantee a certain number of students, and we tell applicants that during the hiring process. However, it sounds like we could do even more to make that clear. Thank you again for your feedback. Best, Greg President & Co-Founder
