Pros

One of the oldest social service agencies in Chicago, it has a tremendous mission that is easy to support and care about.

Cons

The current CEO has been there about six years and has created a culture of bullying, intimidation, and fear.

The Chicago Lighthouse Response
2y
Dear Anonymous Employee, Thank you very much for your candor and courage to make this post! I am extremely concerned about the issues you have raised and apologize for the experience you have had as one of our valued employees. I would like to personally invite you to speak with me about the unacceptable experiences you have described. At the outset, I would like to say that the leadership of The Chicago Lighthouse holds itself to the highest ethical and business standards. If you or any other employee experience or witness unethical or improper behavior, they should immediately approach a trusted manager, our human resources professionals, including myself as Chief Human Resources Officer, or our Chief Compliance Officer immediately and without fear of recrimination. Retaliation of any kind is not tolerated, and anyone found to have engaged in such conduct will be disciplined up to and including termination regardless of level within the organization! The leadership of The Chicago Lighthouse places a high priority on ensuring that we have a healthy, productive, and fulfilling work environment for all our employees and are invested in working with our staff to ensure any concerns or issues are addressed to create a positive work environment. To that end, we have recently launched several new initiatives, including a commitment to stronger employee engagement, transparency in our hiring, promotion and evaluation procedures, and a wholesale review of our compensation and benefit packages to ensure competitiveness and fairness both within the organization and among our competitors. We are also implementing a new learning management system that will allow employees greater opportunities for learning and professional development. No employee of The Chicago Lighthouse should ever experience a negative work environment. However, if they do, they should immediately contact Human Resources, including me directly, to bring the issues to our attention. This is the only way that we can ensure unacceptable behavior is identified and addressed! Anonymous Employee, I again invite you to contact me so that I can address your concerns. For anyone reading this post who is considering working at The Chicago Lighthouse, I would like to say that the unacceptable behavior experienced by Anonymous Employee is not tolerated here and will be immediately investigated and addressed. The leadership at the Lighthouse, from our CEO to every one of our managers, are strongly committed to having an inclusive, welcoming, and fulfilling workplace serving our mission communities – the blind, visually impaired, disabled, and Veterans. It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words so please see some from our recent Lighthouse Palooza, where we celebrated our amazing staff! https://photos.app.goo.gl/a7CaXb3XdYTozHSe7 Sincerely, Mike Nicolai Chief Human Resources Officer

Pros

They company does help the visually impaired and disabled.

Cons

I can only speak for myself but to go through so many checks to get the job physical, TB test, Drug Test, Fingerprint check no one should have to be treated so poorly. I started training 05/16 and went my second day 5/17. I had a hectic morning with some unplannned family situations. I called person that was training us. I advised her I would be 5-10 mins late. I asked if it would be okay to still come while in route or return home. I advised her my family issue. She said okay no problem. We will talk after class. As I enter the building another young later was late as well and she went to the restroom. After going to class shortly another young lady was an hour late. So she said she will just talk to us all briefly after class. No problem. When I get back from lunch I am being told that the someone wanted to see me in her office. I say wow that does not sound like a good thing. She said no usually it isnt and to bring my things with me. On our way there I say to her humph this is kind of strange. She said yeah when they request to see someone she never asks the reason why. I get to the office waiting about 20 mins to be seen. After the lady comes out she takes me in the room we were in the first day and says say we dont tolerate bad attendance and that I was no longer alllowed to finish training or work there. I Said there were two other women late along with me even later, and that I felt it was personal. I also told her I called in advance and was advised to still come. She said if i felt like it was personal I can apply within their company again just not in that building. I am thinking like wow if thats not discrimination I dont know what is. Then she says it wasn't the trainers place to tell me not to come in , however I definitely would not have mind being transferred to a higher up to ask because I live so far away on public transportation. I found out from the other co workers that the other young ladies are still in training. Still allowed to work there when I have done nothing to no one. Its sad that people have personal motives or hate and no mothing about you. For the trainer to know the entire time what she had done while walking me to the office , Wow. Especially from a someone that is training you there is a certain manner of professionalism that should be held. I tried to call an attorney and was advised it is no case because its not about sex or religion etc. But I want other people to be aware of this so that they can be prepared. I felt hurt and very mistreated. I am now looking for other employment.
