President Obama declared the month of January to be National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention month in 2010. The month is dedicated towards both raising awareness of what human trafficking is, but also providing resources on how to identify and prevent acts of human trafficking. These acts can be discreet or apparent and psychological or physical in nature. Victims of human trafficking can be anyone, regardless of their religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, race, color, citizenship or socioeconomic status. Martin Luther King day is commemorated on the third Monday each January. Martin Luther King was a scholar, Baptist minister and a civil rights activist who made a dramatic impact on Black history through his peaceful, nonviolent protests starting back in the 1950s. He is most recognized for his charismatic efforts and inspirational speeches surrounding the American Civil Rights Movements. Although the 13th amendment aimed to abolish slavery in 1865, the Black community continued to experience discrimination and legal penalties for some time after. Martin Luther King spoke out on these injustices through organized boycotts and protests.

Understanding our history can help drive reflection, growth and evolution. With this, some topics we'll be posting on over the coming months will be on various milestones, historical events and key figures impacting Black American history. Coming out of the Union Army victory at Antietam, Maryland on September 17th, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which gave the states within the Confederacy until January 1st, 1863 to leave their weapons and peacefully rejoin the Union. Slaves would be declared free within any states refusing to participate. Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland and Missouri were left out of the Emancipation Proclamation out of fear that these neutral bordering states would secede from the Union. This left about 20% of African Americans enslaved.

π Happy New Year, from our Allied family to yours! π Did you know that New Years has been celebrated on days and months other than the 1st of January? Many cultures have celebrated and still celebrate the new year at different times throughout the year. Mesopotamia, now modern-day Iraq, has the earliest record of new year festivities dating back in 2000 B.C.E. The celebration took place in Babylonia in mid-March around the time of the vernal equinox. βΎπ In Assyria, the new year was celebrated around the autumn equinox, September 21st. The Egyptians, Phoenicians as well as Persians began the new year as of the autumn equinox and the early Greeks began with the winter solstice, December 21st.
