Happy Holidays, from us to you! We realize this isn't the most cheerful time of year for everyone. Winter Solstice, which was December 21st, is a time which can be seen as both a literal and figurative milestone. The Solstice represents the day with the fewest hours of daylight, but it also represents the start of winter with days lengthening as we near springtime. Winter solstice started in observance as early as 10,200 B.C., towards the end of the Stone Age. The ancient Norsemen of Scandinavia celebrate this time through a Yule festival that would run through January. Fathers and sons would bring home large logs, (Yule logs), to represent the return of the sun. Norsemen would set ends of each log on fire and the celebration would continue with a feast until the log burned out. The Norse believed that each spark within the fire represented a piglet or calf to be born in the approaching year. Various cultures around the world celebrate this day with symbols of fire and light.

December 10th marks International Human Rights Day - the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948. These are basic rights and freedoms, including rights to education, freedom of speech, right to live, health, thoughts and equal rights. With the end of the second World War and formation of the United Nations, the community came together to ensure that the horrific occurrences throughout that period would never happen again; there was a great need to emphasize the purpose of Human Rights Day in promoting equality, freedom, peace, justice and to ultimately protect human dignity. The Commission on Human Rights, which was made up with over 18 members spanning various political, cultural and religious backgroun

December 1st is World Aids Day. Founded in 1988, this day is an opportunity for the world to unite in the fight against HIV, offer support for individuals living with HIV, as well as to remember those who have passed in their fight against AIDS-related illness. Worlds Aids Day was also the first ever international day for global health. This year's theme for World Aids Day is focused on ending the inequalities in both health and access to vital health services. During this time, various awareness events and fundraising activities are held around the globe while people wear a red ribbon, the universal symbol of awareness of, support for and solidarity with people living with HIV. This day also serves as an opportunity for individuals with HIV to share their stories and have their voices heard.
