Pros

Great first job, lots of learning opportunities, good exposure to healthcare industry, and a lot of opportunity to learn just about anything you are interested in. Solid benefits, excellent perks. Beautiful campus, great food, comfortable work environment. Generally, your coworkers are very capable and trustworthy people. There is a general lack of experience, but the caliper of employee makes up for that (mostly). Very dedicated and knowledgeable leadership, which results in a strict adherence to the company mission statement...especially the "Do Good" part.

Cons

Experienced employees are not valued any more than a 1yr employee. Company policy is based on the needs of young employees (mostly business majors from privileged backgrounds) who haven't yet proven their abilities to work independently without much oversight. These policies and restrictions are tedious for senior employees, who can be very effective without jumping through the hoops that the new staff has to. Benefits are good, but for the amount of money Epic brings in, they should be much better. It is disappointing that the company doesn't provide more corporate leadership in this regard. It is completely unacceptable that Epic doesn't offer paid family leave, that it's vacation time is so limited, and that it's sick time policies are so full of red tape. There is an army of unqualified TLs. It's a complete lottery draw whether you'll get a good TL or a bad TL. And your TL directly affects how happy you will be. They decide what company policy they want to enforce and to what extent. They also determine which projects you work on, which has a direct correlation to number of hours, job happiness, and your value to your team, role, division, and company overall. Too much power is put into the hands of inexperienced managers.

Pros

Good annual salary. Food is great. Campus is beautiful. Bonuses and raises can be generous if you perform well. Most folks you work with on a regular basis are really friendly and a joy to work with.

Cons

- You make great pay annually, but you’ll work 45-60 hour weeks, most weeks, so the hourly wage isn’t that great. - Really bad parental leave - Only 6 days of sick time a year, regardless of tenure. You’ll need at least 6 for mental health days, (trust me) so you’ll have to cut into your 10-15 vacation days for additional sick time - Management will fire you for vocally disagreeing with their COVID-response plan. - No matter how hard you work or how long you’ve been with the company, you will always be replaceable with dozens of others. It’s impossible to feel any sense of job security.

Pros

Epic provides opportunities to do truly meaningful work. The software Epic develops impacts millions of patient lives. Your coworkers will be smart, hardworking, and passionate people who want to do great work.

Cons

Management is entirely out of touch with reality and believes that employees are mindless drones. Employees are humans, but Epic has abandoned treating us like people. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic Epic has pushed relentlessly for employees to take on needless risk for the sake of workplace culture. There has been strong pressure to stop remote work from the day it began citing the importance of workplace culture and gaslighting employees into believing that we are "heroes helping heroes". After all, if docs and nurses are on the front lines risking their lives why shouldn't we?? Epic has, since the beginning of remote work in March, set a series of deadlines for returning to campus. These deadlines have been torturously extended each time with two weeks notice. The stress and anxiety this causes employees cannot be understated. I know of no fewer than twelve coworkers who have begun therapy since quarantine began - all citing Epic's treatment of them as a major contributing factor.
