Pros

I left Goosehead last year and have been reflecting on what I'd like to say in this review. I refrained from writing one for months, but I have finally had enough of the atrocious fake reviews on this site(I mean hello, what company has a 4.2 rating on Glassdoor). This review is in no way meant to solely bash Goosehead, it's truly shedding light on what it is like working for a growing company that has issues all across the board. Every person DESERVES and has the RIGHT to know what they’re getting themselves into, and whether or not you're stuck at Goosehead or you are considering working here, I would advise you READ this review in its entirety. Pros: There are pros to the job, but many of those pros are held at the corporate headquarters in Westlake, whereas most of your other locations only hold Account Executives and have a call-center vibe. You will work with like-minded and hard-working people and will likely make personal and professional connections that may last you a lifetime. Goosehead invests a lot of money in its people, because the people(not any of the managers/management) are really the only redeeming factor this job provides.

Cons

Cons: I want to break this down so it's easy to follow. Again I am a former employee and have bias, but I can almost certainly assure you that all of the people who left Goosehead and probably over half of the current employees will attest to these points. 1.) The Pay: From the first recruiting call, to your initial in office-interviews, you will be fed all kinds of numbers and income-potential by corporate management which are false. I have no idea how they get away with consistently presenting false income numbers, but when you run your company the manner in which they do, you can do whatever. They say first year account executives average, again AVERAGE, $51,000. WRONG. Most people aren't even making $51,000 2 to 3 years in to the job if they stay there that long. They show everyone the top 5%'s earnings like it is attainable, which it is not. If you look at it, the very successful people in the company have typically been there for years before Goosehead actually created compliance/quality guidelines and before there became a MAJOR saturation issue. There is a reason by 80% of account executives don't make it to one year at this company: they are either fired or they smart up and leave because they realize the income potential is a blatant lie. 2.) The hours: The standard hours at Goosehead are "8:00 AM-6:00 PM". If you actually work these hours, you better be the top producer at the company or you will be heckled and micro-managed by management. Normal hours at Goosehead are typically from 7:30 AM- 6:30 PM, so you are AT LEAST working 55 hours a week. If you think about it, with a 40K salary, that comes down to 14 bucks an hour WITH a college degree which is AWFUL. If you are behind your goal you will likely be working an additional 5-10 hours a week, and Saturday work days will become a norm if you are behind. 3.) Fees: I bet many of you are wondering what I mean by fees. Goosehead is as far as I know the only insurance company in the nation who charges fees for writing policies. These fees, $199 for a home/condo policy, $79 for an auto and so on, are charged on top of your premium for the actual insurance. They are unnecessary and if you try and get them waived, you will face all kinds of push back from your manager. I promise you, this will end relationships you develop with referral partners and will lose you deals with potential clients. 4.) Renewals: In regards to renewals, Goosehead says they "pay industry leading renewals". FALSE. It takes a quick Google to show that they pay well below the industry average. Again, BLATANT lies told to you my senior-management where it literally takes 5 minutes of research to realize it's all false. The most compelling part of insurance and making money in the industry is from renewals. Goosehead will do everything they can to prevent paying you money. If you do not hit certain metrics (even if you sell the most insurance of anyone in the company) you will not be paid on this. This is THEFT. If you have missing signatures and fees on policies, you will not be paid. So many things that are out of your control will be counted against you and you will LOSE money from your own company TAKING it from you. 5.) "UNIQUE AND INDUSTRY DISRUPTING BUSINESS MODEL": This is almost the most laughable part of Goosehead. Their "industry disrupting" business model and complex strategy is simple: target realtors and loan officers and solely focus on this for your referrals. EVERY insurance company and agent already does this, it's not anything new. Goosehead hires countless college students and send them out blindly into these mortgage and realtor offices where they heckle these folks until they send referrals their way. It's essentially throw as many Goosehead agents at specific loan officers or realtors until someone sticks. I have heard COUNTLESS realtors and loan officers mention how their offices are pounded by visits from Goosehead agents. Many people in the industry do not respect Goosehead, and it's easy to see why. This business model is a joke, and it will not last. In the DFW Area, there are literally shops with "No Goosehead Agents Allowed". 6.) False and Inflated Metrics: Goosehead last year won the award for the "Best Company Culture" of any mid-sized business in the United States. This is HIGHLY unlikely, as many of the people that are there are finding ways to leave the company. Managers and upper management push employees to fill out surveys where they inflate these numbers to appeal to investors. This winning this award is LAUGHABLE: remember, nearly 80% of new hires don't make it to 1 year. Goosehead also brags about how they have the HIGHEST NPS(net promoter score) of any company in the WORLD. How did they do this? By begging their clients to fill out positive surveys. I cannot explain to you how many clients have issues with the service team and claims processes. The only reason they have this score is because agents, both sales and service alike, are pressed to make people fill out positive reviews to push this number as high as possible. 7.) The Service Team: I feel like the service team almost has it worse than the account executives. When I first started, when you called into the service line, Mark Jones, Goosehead's CEO, had a goal of calls being answered by the service team within 1-2 minutes of the client calling in. When you call in now, you will wait a minimum of 8-10 minutes to even have someone take your call. This is a HUGE issue, because all of senior-management says the service team "is right where we want them". It's really a joke because the company is so against hiring an adequate number of service agents and would rather work the agents they have to the bone. Also remember all of those wonderful fees I told you about? These fees are charged because Goosehead has "the highest rated service team" in the industry. Again, false. Another lie to feed to investors. 8.) Women's "leadership" program: One of the many feedbacks Goosehead has received is that in recent years up until the last 2, is that they have lacked diversity and a balance on male and female employees. To combat this, they’ve hired more women and a more diverse background and with this, they have succeeded. Where they have failed is with their "women's leadership" program. This group is almost laughable. It's another way the company checks the boxes. It provides zero benefits to anyone and serves literally almost zero purpose, just another pitch they can offer to women interviewing at the company and to investors. 9.) SATURATION: This is something upper management will deny until the end of time: there is no saturation. FALSE. It has become so difficult to find new prospects within the state of Texas. Any person you meet, they've likely heard of Goosehead, not from directly working with them, but having talked to the revolving door of agents that come in and out of loan officer and realtor shops like it's a factory production line. Management feeds all of these numbers saying "we are only working with say 20% of loan officers in Texas, that means we still have thousands of people to work with(the other 80%). The truth is, the majority of these people will NEVER work with Goosehead because of its damaged reputation due to huge volume of agents contacting shops, and because of their policies where they are supposed to use in-house insurance. The main reason turnover is so high is because of the lack of new loan officers to contact. Seeing they are the lifeline of the business, you would think that management would face this reality, but they never will.

Pros

Salary pay, youthful employees, sometimes you feel like you are actually helping someone

Cons

This is flat out a gig you don’t want to explore. Please don’t even check them out or go for an interview. This is a bait & switch kind of employment opportunity. Their hiring practices are not honest & their management practices are unethical. They will tell you this is STRICTLY customer service. They’ll even tell you it’s a “no selling job”, but as soon as you get to training and you have to submit new leads in order to impress the trainers, or learn how to upsell on your first call, or find ways to generate new lines of business, or figure out how to cross sell - OR ELSE! It only gets worse, too. Terribly written policies abound and it’s your job to pick up the pieces and put it back together, all while keeping the customer and the crappy agent who wrote the policy, happy. They tell you you’re the top 2%, which massages your ego, then you see people get fired and quit left & right. The firing and quitting all boils down to the Henderson office’s sub-par management. You will not get proper help. You will feel like you are treading water for months. The live updated boards on the wall will constantly show you how you are behind and should you have to use the restroom, be prepared to be asked to take one more call before you go. Try not to have an accident. Working thru your lunch is expected, as is coming in early and staying late. If you thought overtime was a possibility, think again. They seem happy running people into the ground just to turn around and replace them. This office will not grow, like they tell you it will, with the current manager in place. She is cold, calculated, and a wonderful actress. You’ve been warned. Oh, and by the way, a Department of Labor investigation is really not a good look.

For any candidate interested in the position, we invite them to tour our offices and to shadow current agents to get a true feel for the job before accepting a position. Our service agents are expected to provide a white-glove experience to our candidates by being available to solve active inquiries and requests with the highest quality of service in the industry. Agents are expected to identify gaps in coverage and to educate our insureds to help better protect their assets. We understand that there are many carriers and processes to learn and as such we invite and encourage all employees to ask for help with questions. This position is not easy, and we challenge our people to become better every day as they come down the learning curve. Our managers and team leads from all offices are available to assist and are pro-active in providing real time feedback and coaching to help our agents learn and grow. Pros

Let me start by saying, this is a great opportunity for college grads who have no experience and are looking for their first office job with a salary and consistent schedule. If you have nothing to compare it to and love to drink on the job, you'll think it's the best thing since sliced bread. Also, if you legitimately love property and casualty insurance, here's the place for you. The training program I was apart of was extremely thorough and helpful. I felt valued and had never been apart of such a program where I felt like everyone genuinely wanted me to succeed. You're also given the chance to bond with 5-20 other people in the exact same position as you which makes starting a new job a little less nerve wracking. Everyone is extremely nice to you while in training and generally are also afterwards. You are given opportunities to earn extra paid time off by working on Saturdays. There is a lot of free food. Some of the free food doesn't even have strings attached.

Cons

When you interview or speak with anyone employed there, you will hear over and over that the best part of working here is "the people." This is true. Why is this true? There is literally no other redeeming or enjoyable aspect working here. This is a salaried job (with no overtime) which should be hourly. The company has done an amazing job catering their recruiting to those fresh out of college looking for a salaried job. You go in thinking you'll be at work at 9, leave at 6, and have the weekend to yourself. If this is what you are looking for, LOOK SOMEWHERE ELSE. There are few people who don't arrive at least 30 minutes early and leave an hour late, minimum. You are expected to stay late. You are expected to take more calls after your shift is over until there is an acceptable amount of calls remaining, per management. Your work week will turn from what you thought would be 40 hours into a minimum of 55 hours a week. You will be earning a pay equal or less than someone who works in any other service industry aka retail/food. And at least at those jobs, you get a 10 minute rest break without someone breathing down your neck waiting for the exact time of 9:59 to hit 10:00 so they can crack the whip and get you to take another call. Also expect your managers to come find you in the restroom when you're on a break too long. I literally had leads tell me not to take a bathroom break because there were too many calls waiting to be answered. I've heard people try to reason why they need to take a bathroom break. This is not healthy. This is not ok. There are consistently mandatory meetings during lunch that are apparently ok because lunch is provided. Sometimes lunch is catered on or after peak days. You are expected to go to countless "bonding" activities and give more and more and more of your time to the company if you expect to further your career in anyway. These are all tactics of making you tell yourself that staying any extra 5-10 hours a week and having no other life outside of this company is ok and will benefit you. If you're rolling your eyes as you read this just ask yourself when the last time was that you spent anytime with anyone not apart of the "flock" was? And if you can answer that question, can you say you didn't spend the majority of the time talking about work to them? Managers are there to crack the whip and chop it up with their favorites and that's about it. You constantly have eyes on you. If you take more than a minute to finish your notes or note anything in the case, you hear, "you good?". They are not asking if you are ok or need support. They are asking why is it taking you so long to take another call. The focus has been on having clients hold less than 2 minutes. People don't care about their hold time if they can be sure you won't screw something up that makes them call in again to fix it. The culture of a short wait time has caught up with the company because there are E&O situations left and right. You should expect to encounter at least 5 a week. These mistakes won't just be made by newbies. They will be made by manager favorites and managers themselves. And guess what? It's now your job to fix it! You do have the option to passive aggressively tell their leads about the situation so they can be coached after you fix it, though! This leads to no corrective action, by the way. (Corrective action is specifically for attendance related matters but that's a different section.) The "case ownership" which turn you into a jaded, angry soul. You will regularly take a call that has been a weeks-month long situation someone else has been trying to resolve but since they are on another call, it is now up to you to decipher what is going on in less than 5 minutes and figure out what you're supposed to do. You good? They do not allow any flexibility for time-off requests. Don't expect to get any sympathy if you're not a favorite and your mom is in the hospital. Don't expect to have any Fridays off for the next 3 months. Don't expect to work a half day when last minute situations arise. Do expect to be written up for any ridiculous attendance infractions as soon as you're coming up on your one year mark and they don't want to pay your bonus. Your time will not be respected. Your outside life will not be respected. Your personal opinions and attention to detail will not be respected. Your hard work will not be respected. Respect yourself and stay away from this company.
