Tax Preparer II

Recommend

Business Outlook

Pros

Not one thing. Advise if you want to do taxes research the owner and management of the company you are considerding and ask some of the questions below.

Cons

I would not recommend working under this particular franchise owner. There is no overtime for $10/hr pay no matter how many hours you work. There are no benefits, bonuses, raises, lunches, bathroom breaks, and you're not paid for the extensive training in preparation for the job. When you are required to do CE classes you are also not paid. Franchise owner encourageding a competitive. My understanding is that it depends on the franchise owner as to how the business is run.

Pros

Seasonal job. Flexible hours. Enjoyable client interaction.

Cons

Low wages. Incompetent, untrained office management. Staffing shortage. Office manager was allowed to continue his regular job at DoorDash while managing three H&R Block tax offices. Manager was of little value when problems developed. No employee training.

Pros

The training to start as a tax pro is pretty good. If you get into a good office (luck of the draw) you will learn a lot in the first couple of years. But there are a lot of bad offices with weak managers and very catty tax pros.

Cons

Horrible management. As this is a seasonal job, the managers they hire tend to be unemployed customer service people. You don't have to do taxes to be a manager here (crazy, right?). So most of the managers don't know taxes, and many of them don't have many management skills, tax season is high stress. Pay is poor. After you have a couple of years of experience you can do much better elsewhere. This is compounded by HRB's high prices for services. The best customer complaint is how expensive the fees are.
