Pros

Very flexible hours and easy shift-trading support, supportive work environment, amazing employee perks, employees really care about the wildlife and conservation, non-profit feel, amazingly welcoming coworkers and management, many internal-only opportunities to volunteer and interact with animals, many opportunities to switch between departments.

Cons

Low starting pay but recently introduced experience-based pay raises, turn-over rate is very high ( >75 workers on-season, <20 workers off-season, with 2 of these cycles a year), inter-coworker drama sometimes got way too out of hand, moving up within the department is virtually impossible.

Pros

Employees care about each other. I've worked at the Zoo two different times under different leaders. It could be a great place with the right leader.

Cons

Upper management no longer appreciates us. Castro said he didn't want "Yes" men but that is what he ended up surrounding himself with. Castro seemed amazing, however, he cares about making a name for himself not supporting the keepers who work for him.
