Pros

Great insurance and solid 401k - golden handcuffs, as others have mentioned. Seeing spacecraft being assembled and worked on is really cool and always makes me feel excited again - for a few minutes.

Cons

Private equity acquisition in 2023 and subsequent split of Maxar into two companies (Space in CA and Intelligence with groups in CO, MI, VA, FL) has just made formal a divide that already existed. There was never "one maxar", and now the companies are accelerating apart. Both companies have suffered layoffs and attrition - overworked teams are just getting even more spread thin. Short term and Long term incentive plans were both put on hold last year; "merit" raises did not keep up with cost of living. Promotions and "distinguished" engineer paths all were put on hold. R&D funding has been frozen. It's total hold-your-breath mode and hope the next round of layoffs don't hit you. New CEOs in both companies promise changes "real soon" - those that are still here need to hold them accountable if those promises are not delivered on.

Pros

Great people at the operations level. Schedule is nice with a good amount of time off (it’s needed based on the shift rotation) this is honestly the only reason I’ve stayed this long.

Cons

As others have said, senior leadership has no vision for the company and spends time squabbling back and forth on simple issues. Pay is well below market and does not increase, the largest annual raise I have received is 3% despite receiving praise at every review. We’re supposed to be launching new vehicles “soon” however that project is 3+ years delayed and is such a mess I doubt it will be successful. Many people are beginning to leave due to the lack of upward mobility. Best advice is to stay away unless you’re ok making 30-50k less a year as compared to other companies.

Pros

Great coworkers, interesting technology, the return of events like the Fall Festival.

Cons

Maxar used to be a stellar workplace, but over the last 2 years the decline has been extreme. Leadership just decided to remove direct primary care from the benefits package AND raise insurance premiums by mind-boggling amounts. The 2024 merit cycle was a hot mess. Many high performers got 1% “merit increases” if a peer got a promotion. The mid-year promotion cycle has been delayed, leaving people in limbo who deserve the recognition. These are the people who launched 4 satellites in less than 6 months, who poured everything they had into this company. And the company has taken those wins and turned their backs on the people who brought this success. They have decided that we are numbers on a spreadsheet, not people. It’s no wonder they removed “You Matter” from the values. We don’t to them. The people doing the hard work are expected to penny pinch, work overtime, miss professional development opportunities at conferences, and commute to half empty offices. Meanwhile the people hired to be our leaders, the ones who are supposed to set an example, are allowed to work remotely and are flown in to headquarters on the company’s dime. If you want to cut the travel budget, start with requiring your VPs and above to live in the same state as headquarters and subject them to the same hybrid work schedule as everyone else. At least Dan Jablonsky used to come to the first floor to see his people, drop in to say hi, and listen. Those days are long gone, and I can no longer recommend this company to friends with a good conscience.

Thank you for your tenure and for taking the time to share your feedback and concerns. As we have been sharing and communicating to our employees, every business must consider tradeoffs when it comes to making decisions that are in the best interest of its employees and business. We’ve certainly had to make some difficult decisions as it relates to Maxar’s healthcare offerings to ensure the ongoing health and well-being of the broader employee population, though we remain committed to ensuring we provide access to quality care at a reasonable cost for our employees. We understand these changes can be difficult and our team is available to answer any additional questions or share additional insights that may be helpful and relevant. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to any member of the Executive Leadership Team should you wish to discuss further. Thank you again for your many contributions to Maxar, we welcome the chance to listen to employee feedback as we seek to action on our opportunity areas.
