Best Company I’ve Worked For

Pros

Company culture is empowering. Fast growing company with lots of opportunity. Leadership really seeks to understand. Pay is above average. Benefits are great. Team atmosphere regarding most things. You get to work with creative minds that challenge you to be better.

Cons

It is a fast moving company so for some people working hard, taking responsibility for their actions and being able to pivot and make decisions on their own is difficult. It’s worth it, but you have to be self motivated to want success, that isn’t a con exactly, but a transparent comment for anyone on the fence about it.

Pros

Up & coming company. If you’re lucky a good team & co-workers, manager. Always busy. Company wants to take care of employees. Does lots of marketing/advertising.

Cons

They don’t hire receptionists so they expect the colorists or the color assistants to be constantly interrupted (while already being booked every 15 minutes with color clients ) & expected to help everybody that walks in the door that wants to purchase color or retail or have questions/need consult or have returns etc. plus we also have to check in the clients and check them out as well. (Take their back photo on the iPad) although they do have the option to check themselves out on the app most do not. And there’s only one color assistant working at a time so you literally have to take down every single color with sometimes three colorists working it gets super busy plus you’re expected to squeeze in blow dries that do not account for the clients you’re supposed to shampoo during the time you are doing the blow dry. So logistics is quite a joke over there and it’s just stressful and you are physically exhausted during your shift and after your shift. To me it is not worth it. The colorists are the only ones who are making good tips You only get paid $2.50 for a blow dry and rarely does anyone tip you well if at all for a blowout. Any card tips go into your paycheck so you don’t cash out your tips at the end of your shift and you also get taxed on them. There’s a good chance you could be busting your butt all day on a Saturday and walk out with zero cash tips. Not worth the stress of it all and the long shifts. They also don’t take into account your lunches that are scheduled. You’re only get 30 minutes to begin with and a lot of times you’re booked with shampoos so you don’t even get to take your break or if you do it’s just here and there not an actual break. The job description does not include all the other assistant duties so apparently they forgot about those. You have to do basic stuff like clean the brushes constantly change out the blow dry station brush bins, keep up with laundry & dishwasher , stock color and retail, constantly disinfect shampoo areas, garbage, clean, While taking care of the client shampooing, Proboost deep conditioner, toners, taking down foils, blowouts, etc. That’s fine with all the multitasking but the extra responsibility of checking in and out clients and walking business makes it extremely overwhelming so that’s the downfall to this position IMO

Pros

Madison Reed has a leader, Amy Errett, who is driven to tackle all the challenges in life. The company's mission is to disrupt the hair color industry and they've been successful at that. By supporting only their own product line in their Hair Color Bars they have an edge to deliver the best in customer service, which is what the company strives to excel at no matter the cost. Transparency is evident, with the CEO talking amongst the team about tough issues in our world and how they can be addressed.

Cons

There are some rough spots with management changes and staying focused on specific strategies.

Pros

Lots to learn - great place for young professionals looking to learn about how to operate a fast growing business. There is a sincere commitment to building the company culture based on the company values (Love, Joy, Courage, Trust, and Responsibility), but the actions often fall short of the commitments. CEO genuinely cares about the business and the people in the company. It shows in almost everything she says and does. Benefits are good - full medical/dental coverage. Stock options if you're lucky. HR team is super nice and really cares about the company - but it's sad how little resources they have to do their jobs (same across all areas though)

Cons

Coaching and feedback is minimal - development sometime feels like a buzzword but not an actual focus for most senior leaders in the company. Too many VPs (there are VPs for all possible areas) and not enough functional SMEs to help in the actual day to day work. CEO is driving the culture - without her there is no culture (I find this scary). Most C-team and VP level only care about revenue and not enough about the people. Too many ideas and not enough execution - C team doesn't understand the importance of strategic planning nor do they have a way to prioritize business initiatives. For a growing start-up there's little emphasis on planning, process, and tools. People just make decisions without understanding the long term impact, leaving lower level employees to handle the execution without support. Sometime you feel like you are set up to fail. Most leaders are short term focused and not enough senior leaders with vision setting and operations experience to make the long range strategy come to life.
