Inhumane but good pay

Pros

-Fair Pay -Free snacks and drinks -Standing desks -Great IT dept that works quickly to get your problems fixed -Some great people with good senses of humor--this is what makes it tolerable -Free meal one day a week

Cons

Office: 2-story open floor plan. You'll be sitting one-two feet away from someone on either side of you. There's absolutely no privacy and everyone gets to hear everyone else release gas, blow their nose, etc. B/c it's just desks smashed against each other, there's no place to stash your stuff. Your bag will be against the next person's ankle. If this is your first job, you won't know any better, but believe it or not, other companies at least provide a divider or several feet of space b/w you and the next person. Communication: Like saying Thank You to the person sitting next to you? Forget it. All communication is done thru Slack. Perfect for the loner who hates people. Projects: There are 5 ways to track your projects b/c the company refuses to invest in one Project Mgmt System, even tho they make millions of dollars. So there are a bunch of free/cheap software programs in beta that do one thing, and others that keep track of other things. It is impossible to keep track of what's due, when meetings are, etc. Also, a bunch of important updates are done thru multiple Slack channels. This is great is you have a combo of ADD and OCD, but hard to deal with if you're just trying to get work done. Vacation: You have to beg and get approval from multiple people to take time off. You are better off planning a trip and calling in sick, rather than being guilt-tripped about taking time off. Again, most young people won't realize that vacation is something you should actually have, and since there are so many young people here, they probably don't know any better. Meetings: Too many, too long, and filled with information not relevant to what everyone's doing. When you have a lot of work on your plate, it's a waste of time. Work-Life: Some people work extra long hours, but others don't. Depends on your role. Safety: If I was a girl, I wouldn't want to walk to the office from the train station. You'll be stepping over used condoms, broken glass, and human feces, while also dodging people yelling in the street. I feel a bit unsafe walking out of the office in the evenings when it's dark.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your thoughts and valuable feedback. First, and foremost, the safety of our Madison Reed family is a top priority, which is why the company provides Lyft Safe Ride credits allowing our team members to safely travel to/from our office. We encourage you to utilize the credits as needed. If you’re unsure or have forgotten how to access your credits, no problem! Please reach out to the People team to get a refresher on how to do so. Space is definitely a hot commodity in San Francisco so we hear ya and can appreciate your concerns. We’re growing FAST and sometimes keeping up with space constraints has its challenging moments. That said, we’re actively working hard to develop a plan that can accommodate our growth as we continue to quickly scale throughout the remainder of the year. Pros

Pay is decent but rigged with doubled goals once bonus eligible making it conveniently inachievable once they have to pay. Good CEO but has no real idea what’s happening in color bars or with upper leaders.

Cons

Great clips of color. Crazy turnover, leaders expected to work 24/7, always on call, even on vacation. Sick pay can’t ever be used because its not provided until the end of the year when there is blackout periods. Upper leadership at field VP level is control freak dictatorship. Everyone is terrified and they are really running the business not the nice CEO who is the face of values and culture that don’t exist. Corporate makes everything work for them and hard for salons. All leaders are old Ulta employees who were fired. They complain about how awful Ulta was and only looked at numbers number numbers not people but then that is exactly same culture they brought here. Just hit number and work constantly. Double booked over booked told not eat lunch or just shove a bite in between guests booked very 30 minutes on the dot. Just work till you drop. Expected to report money made every hour while taking guests and managing. And have to add up all sales with calculator by hand. They can’t hire people because the reputation is already bad for working here.

Pros

Promotes diversity, decent pay, great benefits & some managers are very supportive

Cons

Constant changes all the time, company is focused way more on their technology & not the actual color line, training is mostly virtual & not hands on, the appointments are rushed making Covid regulations tricky during busy times & pressure to sell memberships even if not in client’s best interest.

Pros

Over all employees are satisfied at MR. Pay is decent if not good, good benefits, open and accepting culture, and striving to be and do better. This is the Corp employees.

Cons

However, don't work for the Color Crew (customer service) it is night and day from the rest of the culture. Even before COVID when we were in the office we were not allowed to attend 'all hands' meetings and events as it would mean we'd be off the phone. A masseuse was scheduled in monthly for free chair massages for the Corp employees (great right?) Color Crew was never informed so we never got that benefit even though we were in the same office space. It is frowned upon if you get out of your chair to go to the bathroom if it's not a break or your lunch you're not allowed to speak to anyone either through Slack or in person because then you're not helping clients. I was managed out and my position has not been refilled so that they could fill it in a cheaper location in San Francisco. And that tells you all you need to know about the company. As much as Amy Erret says Color Crew is the heart and soul she means we are the cogs that make her money.

Pros

-For the most part, coworkers were amazing. Smart and fun with a bunch of experience. -Health coverage was good in terms of the company paying for it, but if you want something besides Kaiser you'll have to pay more -Work from home -Office is a beautiful space and they have lots of events -The heart behind why the company is an awesome message for people who cannot use traditional box color

Cons

Where to begin.. -You can count on one hand the number of black or POC employees they have. Frequently saw microaggressions and a number of times when a black employee would call them out suddenly there are "problems" with the quality of their work. -DRAMA DRAMA DRAMA. The majority of the Color Crew are women and they are CATTY. Any men they hire are worse than the women. They are in each others business. The worst is the leads, I couldnt believe how many times I could hear them gossiping about other coworkers constantly in the small room they made us sit in and they would talk about people whod been fired or quit or what they would see on social media. I'd hear some of them talking about how they wished to get demoted so they would get to work from home and not have to be in the office -They would threaten you with having to come into the office. If your numbers were suffering they dont ask how to support you or even phrase it like it would be helpful for you to come in, they just say if you dont improve you have to come in everyday, like its a punishment. Then suddenly everyone is just permanently working from home. -Nepotism is the name of the game here. You gotta know somebody to get promoted. If the CEO knows someone or wants something, suddenly you are being pressured into doing it. If a D list celebrity wants to get their hair done suddenly the whole place shuts down and youre literally told you better wear makeup and wear nice clothes and kiss butt. -They could care less about anybodys mental health. People be calling screaming at you and they tell you theyre "passionate". Id seen a couple of my coworkers cry coming out of meetings. One girl whod been there forever suddenly just disappeared. Guess I missed the gossip for that one. -No work life balance, they will guilt you and bully you into working overtime. If youre tired or burnt out they act like they dont understand cause you work from home -The CEO tries to tell you, you can come to her with anything. But really she just puts it back on your supervisor which gets you in trouble. -They treat their engineers like God, who in turn are condescending to everyone else. All these positive reviews from engineers are because they pay them $70-90k and they roll in at 11 and leave by 5. If you're unsure if they actually care about feedback, look at the responses they leave reviews from past employees. They DO NOT CARE.

Dear Former Employee, We are quite surprised to learn about what you described as your experience with Madison Reed, and are very sorry to hear that it was a negative one at that. We do give opportunity for all team members to share their feedback on a regular basis anonymously with our Glint surveys to better understand how we can make improvements, not only as a company, but improvements within each team and department. At Madison Reed, we also have an open-door policy that encourages all employees to be able to speak directly to their managers about any issues. We invite you to contact us directly at HR@madison-reed.com to gain a better understanding. We take this very seriously and read each and every review. There are a few things we’d like to address that were mentioned in your review that we are concerned with, and would like to provide clarity: 1. Madison Reed pays for all of our eligible employee's health care premiums and 50% of our employees' dependents, if they choose to have them on their plan. Kaiser is one medical plan option as we have multiple providers that employees can choose from. Our employees are given informational opportunities to learn about each plan and select which is best for them. 2. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is one of our top areas of focus as a company. In recent months, we have developed a committee that solely focuses on DEI initiatives within our culture. Our hope is that this initiative will have a positive and lasting impact on each and every employee and, on a broader scale, within the greater beauty industry. 3. What you mention in regards to nepotism, treating certain employees better than others, lack of work life balance, and threatening people does not align with the Madison Reed values of Love, Joy, Responsibility, Trust, and Courage, and we hope to remedy this immediately upon your direct feedback to Human Resources. We want to thank you for your feedback. We do not take it lightly, and we truly care about each team member’s employment experience and will take the time to reflect and research what you have shared with us.
